Take Back America 2007
Session: Betrayed!: How the Failure to Care for the 21st Century Veteran is Endangering Families and Jeopardizing Communities.
Description
The Walter Reed scandal is just the tip of the iceberg in the Bush administration's failure to care for our returning veterans and their families.
Tens of thousands of veterans have timed out of the two-year window of mental health care guaranteed by the Veterans Administration. Many of America’s veterans, children, and military family members now meet the definition of an “at-risk” population: Being endangered, as from exposure to disease or from a lack of parental or familial guidance and proper health care.
The untreated effects of combat-related trauma last a lifetime, and long-term consequences include: unemployment, severe depression, divorce, domestic violence, chemical dependency, poor physical health, homelessness, “accidental death,” suicide, and even murder.
But these are not your father’s veterans. As the wife of a National Guardsman who served a year in Iraq, and a charter Board member of Military Families Speak Out, I have seen first-hand the psychological wounds the Iraq War is inflicting in the troops and their loved ones.
In this session, you will learn:
* who the 21st Century veterans are
* how the failure to care for vets and families impacts them and the community
* about a brand new private/public project for veterans and families
* how progressives can promote better care for veterans and families ... and why they should
