Session: The Accidental Archive: Approaches for Video Preservation
Description
It’s an all-too-common situation: a company in the business of film or video production gradually finds itself in possession of an archive of materials that are of potential historic, and even commercial, value—but without much idea about how best to manage it. This session will look at the basics of video preservation, with an eye toward making sense of “accidental collections.”
Topics covered will include the mechanisms of tape decay, storage and HVAC, coping with rare and obsolete formats, selection and triage of materials, and dealing with outside vendors.
