KEY DISCUSSION POINTS

1.Participants introduced themselves and their organizations, their reseach-related contexts, and the expectations for the session (see #2)

2.Summary of expectations (of the session, and also of the possible network):
  • meeting/getting together with like minded researchers, specially in the emergent area of mobile communications
  • establishing joining a community/network
  • link up with research funders
  • platform for sharing existing research (e.g., encouraging
  • publishing/sharing or research); map current research work
  • share resources
  • be aware of new research issues/areas

3.All agreed that the network is a good idea; probably other MobileActive participants in other meetings can eventually join up this “community of practice”.

4.Other issues that came up can be discussed in an interactive communication space set up within the MA08 platform or outside it. (E.g. issues dealing with research design, capacity building of young researchers or non-academic practitioners.)

5.Incentivize the idea of documenting and sharing research via a community online “journal” that will be open access. Link this up with capacity-building activities to help non-academics document and share.

6.Interphase with the Evalutation/Metrics discussion group (c/o Peter Benjamin)

WHERE FROM HERE

1.Set up a communication space (within the MA08 platform or something else, e.g., Elk c/o David). Email list and/or wiki or confabb type platform.

2.First thing to share in the aforementioned space: existing online resources (mailing lists, databases, sites, discussion groups (e.g., CI-Researchers list, Mobile-Society list etc)

3.Start a “knowledge base” in coordination with MA08 plans, which maps research projects/initiatives/ people/organizations that is interactive and

4.Conceptualize the community online “journal” which has a clear interphase with a capacity-building plan (peer-reviews, mentorship arrangments, workshops/writeshops

5.Exploring one common research project—possibly a multi-country research effort. (No topic yet)

WHO CAN HELP:

  • David – offering a web space beyond MA08 (as needed)
  • IDRC – funding opportunities within their priorities
  • All – participate in the communication space and bring the discussion forward.
