Session: Hello Citizen! SMS News for Low-Income People in Brazil
Description
Hello Citizen! is a social inclusion project which utilizes SMS (Short Message Service) technology to distribute free-of-charge information of relevance to registered low-income adherents. Information regarding job vacancies, educational opportunities, free health campaigns, free cultural events, and other information of community interest are carefully selected and disseminated to participants. In Belo Horizonte, 450 individuals from the low-income community of Pedreira Prado Lopes are enrolled to receive these messages.
Near the project's second-year mark the Institute forged a partnership with the Fica Vivo! program created by the State Secretary for Social Defense of Minas Gerais Brazil. At a street art exhibit organized by the program, attendees were able to receive text messages with direct links to images of the works produced in the workshop.
The project will be replicated in other Brazilian cities (Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador). In addition to the text messages, the Hartmann Regueira Institute will also utilize voicemail technology to benefit vision-impaired individuals in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Session seems a little short to cover the information they have available but may have been due to a slow start. Good stats available on delivery and uptake.
- Ian Macdonald on Hello Citizen! SMS News for Low-Income People in Brazil: Interesting session, but presenter didn't speak English. Had an inexperienced translater who tried hard but was difficult to follow.
