Session: The Mobile Web: The Potential and the Reality for Developing Countries
Description
In this skill-share session we will have an interactive dialogue about what is needed for mobile web to meet its promises in the developing countries. We'll introduce a number of provocative questions and discussion topics. We'll also harvest a list of resources to be compiled for further reference. We'll discuss the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to mobile web and our work in developing countries.
A secondary goal is to develop a basic wiki structure and topics for a Mobile Web resource site for MobileActive.org form a small working group to populate and maintain the content of the site so that it will help others to unlock the potential of Mobile Web for social impact.
The organizer is the Director of Ungana-Afrika, an organization supporting the deployment of innovative technologies within under-served communities and networks.

Sharing ideas and experience
Toni was a great facilitor for what turned out to be a lively discussion. The main barrier we encountered was that we all had different ideas of what the 'mobile web' is. Some participants felt strongly that NGOs and governments need to develop sites and applications appropriate for cellphone browsing, others felt that there was more future in text (sms)-based campaigns. On the whole, there is a positive view of the potential of mobiles to convey information and useful tools to bottom-of-pyramid groups in developing countries. A really interesting session. |
