The 2005, GPS was everywhere, google maps came out.

geohashing for subselect on bounded data. spatial support in mysql and sqlite means fast, native lookup.

geo lat/lon is bad because assumes points, boxes are better

events can be geocoded, so something that is temporal in nature can have a physical location. I like that :)

Flickr, beijing olympics using the OSM because Y! map sucks.

basically, loads and loads of geo tools for photos, maps, annotations, lookups. lots now have contributable data.

KML can point to external resources for mashing data sources from multiple locations.

GeoJSON

OpenLayers JS library, more involved, relies on more GIS knowledge.

ModestMaps for visualisation of data, actionscript, flex, python. from Stamen Design.

Routing is not a solved problem, what about different transport options, different journey options - safest cycle route to my destination.
