Future of Web Apps (FOWA)
Session: Beyond Google Maps
Note by Phil Wilson:
History of mapping, cultural and historical importance and usage. Paper ones used to have annotations by other explorers. The exploring age.
The 2005, GPS was everywhere, google maps came out.
geohashing for subselect on bounded data. spatial support in mysql and sqlite means fast, native lookup.
geo lat/lon is bad because assumes points, boxes are better
events can be geocoded, so something that is temporal in nature can have a physical location. I like that :)
Flickr, beijing olympics using the OSM because Y! map sucks.
basically, loads and loads of geo tools for photos, maps, annotations, lookups. lots now have contributable data.
KML can point to external resources for mashing data sources from multiple locations.
GeoJSON
OpenLayers JS library, more involved, relies on more GIS knowledge.
ModestMaps for visualisation of data, actionscript, flex, python. from Stamen Design.
Routing is not a solved problem, what about different transport options, different journey options - safest cycle route to my destination.
Talking fast, covering basically everything there is to know about maps on the web
customising user interfaces to make users comfortable with using the product you're providing, colours and branding, icon types,
mobile geolocation.
dash.net car gps with api.
no way to really explain this presentation without the slides, too many links, too much information!
