Future of Web Apps (FOWA)

Note by Phil Wilson:
switched out title for "getting through the tough times"

the financial situation is probably worse than you think.

knock on effect of employers' bad times on employees

there's no money for the waterfall project management any more. too costly.

bad times in particular for big vendors atm because for most things OSS will be more than good enough. no cost of software licensing up front, only a support cost if you choose.

Processing in the cloud is important when you can outsource part of your infrastructure, but you can't move from EC2/S3 to something else, nasty lockin.

joining the conversation requires courage
  • this seems weird, why set up somewhere for them to talk rather than trying to own the conversation?

current economic crisis is a failure on the part of loads of different groups, but there will be a huge opportunity for regulatory technology once there's a plan in place for the after-times. there will be masses of regulation coming, so sell some software for it.

also software opportunity for basic needs provision over services like gasbuddy.com

also opportunity for getting into the maintenance of old code or putting web front ends on existing legacy apps because those core apps aren't going anywhere soon.

telecoms opportunity - we won't accept being separated from our phones, even after we've made other sacrifices. this means there's a dedicated market you can sell into.

startups shouldn't go to VCs, goals are different and don't work in your interests. at the moment their terms will be even worse for the startup

being the best solution you can for employers increases not only your value for current company, but also potential employers. this means developers being able to do some design and vice versa (can't beat nature but there are skills you can learn). LAN sysadmin guy who took elec eng night courses to solve the wiring problems which appear in every single location.

don't be an X developer, just be a web developer, build your skills, become multi-faceted.

contribute, contribute contribute. nothing better for your skills and networking, personal development and career. if i can't find you on google, why should i hire you? there will be people in that application list who are on google and clearly have the passion that you don't.

rthe power of networking is undervalued. we build social tools but real networking is essential and great for you and the hiring company. always talk to people at conferences!

Our attendees asked why we didn't have Confabb Notes last year; it was so powerful they demanded it for next year.
