In 2008, Sociology is in its 45th year since the founding of the university in 1963. Since that time the Department has been at the fore-front in developing some of the core interests in the field, especially in regard to social and cultural theory, the sociology of science , language and interaction, and gender and women’s studies. More recently, this has been complemented by new work in the areas of social informatics and the urban. The research role of the Department has been matched by the contribution it has made in fostering the sociological careers of over 70 alumni who now occupy senior academic positions in UK or overseas social science.
